'Family Affair' Victories In Forest

It was a family affair for Dick and Trish Burbidge (Tauranga) on Saturday when Dick, in a major upset, won the New Zealand senior men's orienteering title from C. W. Battley (Auckland), and his wife, Patricia, won the women's title.

In Mrs Trish Burbidge's case it would seem almost as if orienteering were to be regarded as a competitive sport for pregnant and nursing women. Last year's world title was won by a woman three months pregnant, and Mrs Burbidge is the mother of a 4 1/2 month-old baby son.

Fed Baby First

Mrs Burbidge, who is still breast-feeding her baby, first attended to her wee son's needs by feeding him, then ran the physically demanding course, through part of the Rotpehu forest, to win the championship in 1h 15m 50s.

Dick Burbidge thrust himself right into the front rank for selection for next year's world championship squad with his brilliant victory in the elite men's division in the fine time of 1h 5m 53s. But he had a hard battle to head off the defending champion, C. W. Battley (Auckland), who finished second in 1h 10m 51s.

Battley has a very fine, consistent record in national championships to date. During the six years the event has been held, he has had two wins, seconds and a third.

And yesterday he won the wind-down race in another part of the Rotoehu forest.

Third was the consistent South Auckland performer Ross Brighouse, of Waiuku, in 1h 14m 13s, and his brother Terry, of Taupo, won the M35A championship.

F. Smith (Hutt Valley) was fourth, ahead of the Auckland champion, B. Shuker (Waiuku), with K. Walker (Hamilton} sixth.

Faultless Run

Mrs Anitra powling (Dunedin) was second in the women's event with a former champion and world championship representative, Mrs Robyn Dayies (Putaruru), third.

A. Nicholls (Auckland), with a faultless run, took the veteran mens title by the remarkable margin of 42m 56s, and his wife, Margaret won the W35A title.
